Essential Oils for Pets is a great topic to explore. If used responsibility they can brighten and support our pets quality of life also. We want to create awareness here around what oils are safe and what is not and which oils to use for your pets. We also debunk some myths around safety of oils so you can rest assured, when using quality, unadulterated oils you pets will thrive.
Our Pets Matter Too
We often have the questions around essential oils for pets and our response it always simple. Treat your pet how your would treat your other family members. Feed them good food, care for them naturally and they will also thrive and have a quality of life unseen today. There is so much ill health in our animals today and to understand why this is we have to take note of the quality of food and water we give them, what chemical based products we put on and in their bodies, and do they get the exercise they need?
Owning a pet is a big responsibility and not one to be taken lightly.
“If there is one thing I have learned in my lifetime of working with animals and their owners, it is that people love their animals and would do anything within their means to keep them healthy and happy for as long as possible. Pets have become an integral part of our families, and our homes would not be the same without them” – Dr. Janet Roark

It’s important to keep our pets in mind as we use essential oils in our homes. Dogs and cats in particular have 200–300 million olfactory receptors (humans have only 5–6 million). Their sense of smell is very sensitive, so when you are diffusing, be sure to use a water-based diffuser like the petal or Lumo diffuser, and only diffuse 4–5 drops at a time in an open area where your pet can leave the room if desired.
Which Oils are Safe for Pets?
Due to this sensitivity, there are a few oils to avoid with pets. Of course, we can use other oils instead.
Here are a few suggestions according to Dr. Janet Roark, Veterinarian, Hill Country Mobile Veterinary Service:
- Instead of Tea Tree (Melaleuca), use Geranium, Arborvitae, Myrrh, or Cedarwood.
- Instead of Wintergreen, use Copaiba, Frankincense, or doTERRA AromaTouch®
- Instead of Cassia, use doTERRA On Guard®, Oregano, or Thyme.
Many oils can support the various body systems of your animals. Always dilute oils down to 1–2 percent prior to application (100 drops of a carrier oil for every one drop of essential oil). Many prefer using Fractionated Coconut Oil as a carrier oil but there are many others. Dilute even more for animals that are less than 10 lbs/5 kg.

Is it safe to use Essential Oils around Pets?
While there is some controversy surrounding the essential oils on animals, when used properly, essential oils can be part of a well-rounded program to help your pets live happy, healthy lives.
Just as it is of key importance to use pure essential oils on yourself and your family, you should use only high-quality, pure essential oils with your pets.
Essential oils have numerous benefits for your pets. They can help with calming emotions, soothing muscles, deodorizing unpleasant aromas, and maintaining overall wellness for your furry family members. As with any new product you introduce to your pet, begin slowly.
- Start small. Start with a small amount of a diffused or diluted essential oil, and then observe your pet’s behavior.
- Diffuse. Keep your diffusers in a safe place where your pet can’t knock it over. When you’re diffusing, be sure to use a water-based diffuser and only diffuse four to five drops at a time in an open area, where your pet can leave the room if desired.
- Dilute. Always dilute essential oils down to 1–2 percent (100 drops of a carrier oil for every one drop of essential oil) before topical application. Dilute even more for animals under 10 pounds.
