How to Improve Digestion Naturally at Home is a topic I regularly get asked about and so I wanted to share with you my top 5 tips on how to improve digestion naturally at home.
So let’s dive right in. This is a really important topic.
Tip 1 – Remove Inflammatory Foods from your Diet to Support Digestion
So the first tip I have for you is to remove inflammatory foods from your diet and I can speak from experience here.
I know how inflammatory foods affect me and when I don’t consume them, I feel much better.
For some people simply removing the inflammatory foods from their diet reduces the bloating and the discomfort allowing them to function normally.
These people actually start to feel normal again, which is so, so important.
So when I talk about inflammatory foods, there’s two main ones that come to mind, and that is gluten and dairy.
Gluten can be found in your wheat products.
In many processed foods, even supplements contain gluten.
So make sure you read your packaging.
Dairy is another highly inflammatory food and is found in a lot of processed foods.
Make sure you read your labels to check.
There are so many foods containing gluten and dairy available to us these days and often we do not even know we are consuming it.
Even for a breastfeeding mum and her baby, if baby has some tummy issues, the dairy can be coming through mums breast milk causing an intolerance or reaction in baby.
So if that’s you, that’s a little tip for you to note or share with those you know are having issues.
Gluten and dairy are both high inflammatory foods.
When we start to remove them from our diet, often we find an improvement in our digestive health.
So that’s tip number one, remove inflammatory foods from your diet.
Tip 2 – Remove Additives from your Diet
The second tip I have for you is to start to remove additives from your diet.
Now, I have had a personal experience with this where MSG would cause a lot of discomfort, a lot of bloating, in my body, and it took me a long time to identify it.
But now I live an absolutely clean, additive free diet, and I find I don’t have those symptoms anymore.
My body was so, so much happier when I removed the additives.
Additives create inflammation in the gut and when we support our health by eating a diet that does not contain additives we find the inflammation can subside.
If you need support identifying additives in your food so you can start to make better choices grab our free additives guide.
It’s exactly the same guide as I used when I started on my journey to identifying additives, and now obviously I’ve used it so frequently I don’t need to go back to it all the time.
From reading labels consistently with this guide, I soon learnt what the main additives were.
I learned from those basic building blocks of identifying what ingredients are, what numbers mean and now can identify most additives without any support.
Be mindful that additives can be labelled many different ways.
Take MSG for instance: MSG, is 621, is Monosodium glutamate, is also sodium glutamate.
MSG can also be hidden under yeast extract, malt extract, natural flavours, spices, herb extract plus more.
There’s so many ways that the food manufacturers sneak these little additives into our food.
So the second tip is to make sure you read your labels and remove all preservatives, all numbers and colours, all flavours and artificial sweeteners from your diet.
Tip 3 – Support your Digestion Naturally at Home
The third tip I have for you is to support your digestion naturally at home using ingredients from nature.
When we feed our body more chemicals to try and support our digestion we are only adding to the inflammation and putting more pressure on our body to detox the chemicals.
If we are using natural products that support, not harm our body the effectiveness increases.
We need to turn to natural ingredients in order to support our digestion in a really positive way.
For instance, peppermint offers a great relief from digestive discomfort.
I really enjoy peppermint oil as a support for digestive health.
I enjoy a drop of peppermint oil in warm water as a tea or add a drop to a peppermint tea bag.
You need to make sure you are using a top notch, really good quality brand, that is safe for internal use.
You can use peppermint oil topically, aromatically and internally.
There’s so many different ways you can enjoy peppermint, and it has amazing digestive support.
Fennel is amazing as well.
You can put fennel into salads.
I personally love using fennel oil. I put a drop into my liquorice tea and enjoy the benefits that way.
There are so many ways you can expose yourself to beautiful, natural, plant based products to support digestive health.
Ginger is another option.
Ginger is incredible for nausea, motion sickness and upset tummy.
Ginger oil benefits are amazing if you can get a top quality ginger oil.
If the oil is of great quality, the required constituents are present meaning its effectiveness is powerful for ill feelings and digestive health.
There’s so many different ways you can be using nature to support your digestive system.
My tip here for you today is consider trying natural options first, before you start adding more chemical exposure, and the compounding effect of chemicals to your body.
Chemicals cause inflammation and discomfort to the gut so avoiding them at all costs is sensible.
So the third tip is to make sure you’re using natural options to support any digestive discomfort you are having.
Tip 4 – Eat Organic Food
The fourth tip is eat organic food.
So much of our food is laden with herbicides and pesticides you need to eat organic.
You may have heard of the famous glyphosate!
Glyphosate is now proven and known to be very toxic to the body.
In fact, it causes much havoc with the digestive system.
And by eating organic, you are stepping away from exposure to glyphosate and toxic harmful chemicals.
And so therefore, looking after your system rather than damaging it.
Our fourth tip is to eat organic.
Tip 5 – Remove Processed Sugar from your Diet
The fifth tip is to make sure you are removing processed sugar from your diet.
When you look at soft drinks, processed foods, confectionary, the first ingredient is sugar.
You need to be reading your labels.
Sugar is highly inflammatory and is responsible for many health conditions.
Reducing processed sugar in your diet is going to be extremely beneficial for you and your children.
Where do we find a lot of sugar?
In confectionery.
In bread.
Processed foods.
Take away foods.
Processed sugar is hidden in so many different places, and we have to read our labels.
So the last tip tis to make sure you are not consuming processed sugar, and that also includes removing sugar in beverages as well.
Alcohol is a culprit too because manufacturers don’t have to disclose the amount of sugar on the label.
So beer and wine, those types of drinks have a lot of sugar, and we really don’t know what we’re actually consuming.
Soft drinks and cordials contain large amounts of sugar.
You can replace these with water of course however many struggle to drink water. If this is you, you can make it fun with a few tips I have to share.
Kombucha that is a great alternative also.
Make sure you read the kombucha labels because you can be caught out with high levels of sugar also.
But just make wiser choices!
If you need to have a sugar filled drink, make a better choice.
Also watch out for artificial sweeteners in your diet and zero products as aspartame for example is extremely harmful and should not be consumed.
